American standard cast steel floating ball valve - an economical sealing solution for medium and large diameters in the API/ASME system


Design concept

The pressure-bearing shell is made of ASTM A216/A352/A351 series casting materials and strictly follows the API 608 and ASME B16.34 American standard systems. The ball is not equipped with a fixed ear shaft. After closing, the medium pressure pushes it towards the downstream valve seat, and the sealing force automatically increases with the pressure difference. The valve body adopts the near-final casting process, which can form the full flow channel and flange in one go. Core logic: Cover the medium and large diameter requirements from DN50 to DN200 with the economic efficiency of cast steel, achieve bidirectional reliable sealing with the simplest floating structure, ensure full life cycle compliance with the American standard closed-loop system, and provide the most cost-effective standardized isolation components for medium and low pressure pipelines.


Performance advantage

· Pressure self-tightening seal: When closed, the thrust of the medium pushes the ball towards the downstream valve seat. The sealing specific pressure automatically increases with the pressure difference, making the seal more reliable under high-pressure conditions.

· Bidirectional zero leakage: Symmetrical structure, meeting API 598 high-pressure gas seal zero bubble acceptance, reliable bidirectional off from low pressure to full pressure.

· Excellent low-pressure sealing: The elastic sealing ring or pre-tightening spring on the back of the valve seat provides the initial sealing force, enabling airtight shut-off even under extremely low pressure differences.

· Full bore zero pressure loss: The ball hole is the same as the inner diameter of the pipe, with nearly zero flow resistance, allowing it to pass through the pigging machine.

· Economic efficiency of large diameters: The casting is close to the final formation, with high material utilization rate. The comprehensive cost for DN100 and above is significantly better than that of the forged steel solution.

· Minimalist structure: No ear shafts, bearings or complex piston valve seats. The number of components is approximately 60% of that of fixed balls of the same diameter, making maintenance simple and convenient.

· Structural damping and vibration reduction: The inherent damping characteristics of the casting structure can absorb pipeline vibration and thermal shock, making it suitable for pulsating working conditions such as compressor outlets.


Safety performance

· Anti-blowout valve stem: Installed from the inside of the valve body, with an inverted sealing step at the bottom. Even when the cover is completely loosened, the valve stem will not be blown out by the medium pressure, meeting the mandatory requirements of API 608.

· Fireproof structure optional: Configurable primary non-metallic seal + graphite secondary seal, certified by API 607/6FA.

· Anti-static conduction: The resistance between the ball, valve stem and valve body is ≤10Ω, eliminating the risk of static electricity accumulation.

Note on the pressure in the middle cavity: The liquid trapped in the middle cavity of the floating ball may abnormally increase pressure due to thermal expansion. It is recommended that in situations prone to temperature rise, a ball with a pressure relief hole or an additional middle cavity discharge valve be selected.

· Casting quality control: 100% radiographic testing of pressure-bearing castings, acceptance in accordance with MSS SP-55, and elimination of volume defects such as shrinkage porosity and gas holes.
